Missy was a cornerstone of the Office of Specialized Services (OSS) and, as her son Josh beautifully described, a vital part of 鈥淩amapo鈥檚 cultural fabric.鈥 Missy was a proud Ramapo alumna. She earned her BA in Sociology from Ramapo and went on to earn her MA in Applied Sociology from Montclair State University. She joined the College in 1996 as an Independent Living Counselor/Academic Counselor, a role in which she supported and guided countless students over many years. She held this position until 2018 when she was promoted to Assistant Director. As a member of the OSS team, Missy worked diligently to ensure that every student she served had not only the accommodations they were entitled to, but also the encouragement and confidence to fully participate in the life of the College. Missy also shared her knowledge by teaching many sociology courses.
A tireless advocate for students with disabilities, Missy was instrumental in Ramapo鈥檚 ascent to be counted among the most accessible and inclusive campuses in the country. Further, her impact can be seen and felt in the many students whose academic journeys and personal growth were strengthened by her counsel.
In honor of her dedicated service and the profound impact she had on our students, her son Josh has established the Missy Long OSS Memorial Scholarship. This endowed scholarship will specifically benefit undergraduate OSS students with financial need, ensuring that Missy鈥檚 legacy of support and care for our students continues in perpetuity.
