Members asked questions on the new topic of reducing minimum credits required for graduation from 128 to 120. Provost Barnett mentioned the primary reasons as cost savings and ability of students to graduate in four years behind the proposal to reduce credits required for graduation from 128 to 120. Provost Barnett mentioned that a number of institutions have minimum credits for graduation of 120. Councilor Stellenwerf expressed concerns that minimum graduation requirement of 120 credits with 4-credit courses would impose serious limitation on the number and types of courses that can be offered. She further suggested replacing credits with units may solve the problem of 128 credits for graduation. President Saiff and Councilor Spar commented that the reduction of credits would adversely impact the curriculum. Provost Barnett emphasized the need to continue the conversation on academic rigor, academic needs of students, GenEd, and minimum number of credits for graduation. Members discussed various alternatives in order to reaffirm our strength in liberal arts curriculum. The idea of Endowed Chairs or College Fellows was discussed. 2) Discussion with ARC Members of the Executive Council and ARC discussed the issue of reduction of minimum credits required for graduation. Members tried to understand the reasons for the change. The following questions were considered: Is there a cost saving associated with the change in minimum number of credits? Do other schools that have 120 credits for graduation offer 4-credit courses? If we reduce the credits, should the reduction be achieved by trimming the major or the school core? What would be the effect of lesser number of courses on the employability of students? Should we consider offering 3-credit courses? Where did the idea of reducing credits originate? Members agreed that financial analysis is necessary and that reverting back to three credit courses can be very expensive for the advising and registrars office. Members decided that a detailed financial analysis would be necessary before taking further steps. The Executive Council will meet next on Wednesday, March 25, 2009.
