One purpose according to Provost Barnett was to bring the faculty together before the Middle States Report is closed and continue the discussion on General Education. Councilor Bautis suggested that it is effective to provide time for convening groups and units to meet separately for a short time during the faculty in-service. 2) General Education Members discussed the General Education (GenEd) curriculum, the common core, which represents the common experience of every Ramapo graduate. Provost Barnett stressed that the College needs to revisit the definition of the common experience that every Ramapo graduate should have, and also the need to map the outcomes based on that common experience with the GenEd curriculum. She emphasized the need for a curriculum that would challenge our students. Councilor Morley pointed out that the common experience can suffer in spite of a good selection of courses because of poor teaching quality. He added that liberal arts and humanities needed to be incorporated to a greater degree into the GenEd. Councilor Spar expressed the significant issues in connection with the GenEd curriculum and the concern that our College lacks sufficient resources to staff our current GenEd program; therefore, it may not be feasible to add additional components to the GenEd program. He and President Saiff suggested that the entire curriculum may have to be revisited alongwith the GenEd curriculum. President Saiff said a few words on the impact of the recent course load adjustment following the implementation of CEP on the GenEd. In response to Councilor Becklens question regarding whether the underlying problem was poor GenEd curriculum or lack of full-time, experienced faculty to teach GenEd courses, the Executive Council responded that GenEd suffered from both the problems. The school needs to identify common experience that is dynamic and unique to Ramapos mission and also have experienced full-time faculty take up teaching of GenEd courses. Finally, members discussed who should be in charge of the restructuring of the GenEd curriculum. One or two members suggested that ARC should delegate the task of GenEd restructuring to subcommittees. 3) Institutional Effectiveness Group (IEG) President Saiff brought to the attention of the Executive Council that faculty body was underrepresented on the IEG. He invited the Executive Council to recommend names of faculty members who can effectively serve on the IEG that meets every Wednesday at 10 a.m. 4) Center for Genocide and Holocaust Studies President Mercer reported that some faculty members have been misinformed about the closing of the Center. The College has no intention of closing the center and all rumors related to the closing of the Center are incorrect. President Mercer and one or more members from the administration will conduct a review of the Center along with faculty. 5) New faculty orientation Councilor Morley raised the topic of new faculty orientation. Provost Barnett agreed to implement the recommendations from the report by Councilors Morley and Lopez and FRC. The new (to be hired) Associate Vice President for Budget and Personnel will organize and run the program. Faculty will provide the content for the orientation that would start in the middle of August 2009. President Saiff proposed to include this on the agenda for the next Faculty Assembly meeting. 6) Searches Councilor Morley commented on the difficulties in conducting faculty searches due to late advertisements for faculty positions. The College advertised faculty positions as late as January this year. A smaller than expected number of candidates responded to the advertisement; the College needs to advertise two to three months earlier than January to ensure quantity of quality of applicants for faculty positions. Provost Barnett acknowledged that the College advertised for faculty positions as late as January unlike the previous two years when the positions were advertised much earlier. She cited uncertainty regarding availability of funds in the budget as the reason for the delay. Councilor Morley inquired about closing the search for the current year and reopening it the next year in light of the inadequate pool of applicants. Further, he asked if the position would be available if the convening group decides to continue the search next year. President Saiff suggested that a number of schools in the country advertise for a faculty position subject to budgetary approval. Our College may follow the same method to ensure that we advertise faculty vacancies at the right time. The budgetary issues can be handled before making an offer of employment to the candidate. Councilor Bautis asked if all schools email other colleges and associations to inform them about the faculty search. 7) Moving expenses and issues pertaining to international faculty Councilor Mentore asked whether the College can provide moving expenses to incoming new faculty. President Mercer responded that State of New Jersey laws do not allow reimbursement of moving expenses. In response to Councilor Mentores question about assistance by College in obtaining green card (permanent residency) for international faculty, President Mercer responded that the College does not provide monetary assistance but provides guidance. 8) On campus accommodation for faculty Councilor Morley raised the topic of on-campus faculty accommodation. President Mercer said that we can revisit the topic of providing accommodation to new faculty on campus. 9) Research funding Councilor Lopez expressed concerns about availability of lesser funding for research, conference travel, and curriculum development. President Mercer informed that funds will be allocated towards strategic priorities based on their importance. More funds would be made available for academic support and academic programs. The information regarding allocation of funds will be posted on web. 10) Dinner Lecture Series Councilor Morley discussed ways to ensure good participation for the first dinner lecture on February 18, 2009. President Mercer informed the Executive Council about the new trustee member appointed to the Board of Trustees. He expressed confidence in the new member and made a number of positive comments. The Executive Council will meet next Wednesday on February 11, 2009. Minutes submitted by Madhu Govindaluri, February 9, 2009.
