The relationship between governance structure and faculty participation was discussed. President Mercer pointed out that a number of new and young faculty members have been hired in the past three years. Some of them may need time to actively contribute to the governance and leadership needs. Everyone agreed that participation is low and the underlying reasons need to be identified and resolved. President Saiff emphasized the importance of community bonding and how a faculty dining space and events such as Holiday party, lecture series can help building the bond between members of the College community. 2) Technology classrooms Councilor Stellenwerf suggested that faculty are not aware of the technology in the room and need to be informed about the various technologies available in the classrooms. She mentioned the example of a smart board in B224 that was not used since faculty members were not trained to use it. 3) Faculty searches Councilor Stellenwerf initiated a discussion on the searches. Provost Barnett reported that the College was successful in hiring high quality faculty and that the goal is to advertise positions for next year as early as September 2009. Councilor Morley expressed that convening groups should get a fair chance to submit their proposal for new faculty lines. Provost Barnett expressed the need for a streamlined process to make sure that all convening groups get a chance to communicate their need for new faculty lines. 4) Spirituality center Councilor Morley showed an interest in the programming of the faculty member. Provost Barnett said that Pat Chang is charged with forming a committee to oversee the activities of the spirituality center; the committee would consist of one faculty member as well. 5) Teaching assistants and the peer-facilitator model Councilor Spar initiated a discussion on teaching assistants. He expressed that teaching assistants are an effective way of achieving quality work from students. Councilors Becklen and Mentore shared their views about EOF tutors and termed the concept as peer-facilitator model. Councilor Morley and Provost Barnett suggested non financial ways of rewarding students that volunteer to act as per facilitators. Other discussions: Councilor Morley spoke on the benefits of organizing conferences on campus. Councilor Spar asked Provost Barnett some questions about the in-service.
