FAEC/SGA Leadership Meeting The Faculty Assembly Executive Council and leaders from the Student Government Association will meet Oct. 7th, 2009. Topics include enhancing the academic environment on campus, establishing student-led traditions that focus on Âéśš´ŤĂ˝ as an academically-oriented institution, underutilization of academic resources on campus, and increasing the amount of homework assigned. Could ask SGA representatives about how to improve the experiential requirement across classes, how to maximize the student response rates on online evaluations of faculty, and how to better orient new students. SGA leadership meets regularly with the President and Provost. National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and Graduating Senior Survey Results Âéśš´ŤĂ˝ students say that they spend little time outside the classroom on academic work. Graduating Senior Survey indicates that some students don’t view the courses as rigorous or challenging enough, but that this critique varies quite a bit across majors. The graduating Senior Survey will be available to faculty and broken out by discipline. Need to look at how consistent the disciplinary critiques across the years. Graduating Senior Survey was recently redone because some of the questions were not good, but some areas are available for comparison. Need to link this survey to program reviews. Within 5 years, program reviews will play a large part in any allocation of resources. Instruction Evaluation Videoconference Do students perceive that some faculty members teach with the end of semester evaluations in mind? Provost’s office is going to have a videoconference on faculty evaluation. What is the role of these evaluations? How do you demonstrate our competence/excellence in teaching? Clare Naporano has the information on when and where. Open Faculty Assembly Meetings Open meeting times are available on Nov. 11th, 2009 and Jan. 20th, 2010. Topic proposals sought. Suggestions include a discussion of the Liberal Arts and Professional Studies (LAPS) Report, aspects of the four pillars (e.g. intercultural education, interdisciplinarity), the lack of a Philosophy major, and the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC) mission. Faculty Dining Area The President’s current proposal excludes staff. Is this a good idea? Faculty and staff may have different needs. Faculty members need a space in which to exchange ideas and get to know new faculty. President and Provost might drop by for lunch on occasion. May have guest speakers come for lunch as well. Online Winter Session Faculty members are concerned about situations in which a student is enrolled in a pre-requisite course, doesn’t pass, and is then enrolled in the next course. The Provost responded with the following three points: This year’s academic calendar is very odd; contains anomalies that won’t appear again for 7 years. Student will need special permission in such instances at the time of registration. Most courses being offered in Winter Session won’t need pre-requisites since many are introductory level courses. Students can register for spring courses even if they haven’t passed a fall pre-requisite and this doesn’t usually present a huge problem. Faculty members are also concerned about the quality of work over the holidays. Students who don’t keep up with the work due to holiday distractions simply won’t do well in terms of their course grade. Both faculty and students requested the winter online session and experience benefits as a result (monetarily and in terms of flexibility of scheduling courses, respectively). Notice is going out this week from the provost’s office about the registration requirements. All courses are online. The college is physically closed during the holidays, so we can’t have on-campus courses during winter break. AFT leadership may not be aware that they need to approve the academic calendar. Special Review of Online Courses The Academic Review Committee (ARC) is not looking to do special reviews of old courses that have been converted to an online offering. They may want to review new online courses that haven’t been previously offered in another delivery mode. ARC members don’t want to approve delivery mode for courses; they consider this the convening group’s domain. Deans approve delivery method? Yes. Currently, both the major’s convener and the unit’s dean must sign off for the stipend to get approved by the provost. The signature from a convener is sufficient right now, but that doesn’t mean that the convening group has really reviewed the course to make sure it is appropriately delivered online. Generally, upper level courses don’t get put online. Deans may need to act as gatekeepers along with conveners in order to assure that delivery methods are appropriate. Adult Learning Consultants will be on campus assessing the feasibility of enhancing experiences for the adult learner. Adult learners are defined as those older than 24 years or those who have had some sort of life-changing experience (e.g. veterans who may not be 24 yet). Want to provide a transformative experience through learning at Ramapo. Can we do this for adults too? Liberal Studies major might be a good choice (Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, MALS). Moving toward more evening courses? Perhaps because many adults are only available after work. Ramapo used to offer Saturday courses to accommodate adult learners. Could also recruit well-to-do individuals from the area who want to continue learning. Such students may also want to contribute financially to the college. Institutional Effectiveness Committee Still seeking a representative. FAEC representatives will go back to their units and ask for volunteers. Academic Review Committee Should have items to vote on by the next Faculty Assembly meeting. Next Faculty Assembly meeting is Oct. 21, 2009.
