Approved (unanimous, voice vote) Faculty Assembly President Report Edward Saiff In-Service Dates have been changed to 5/25 and 5/26; this is after grades are due, but now overlaps with first summer session teaching. 1Step (campus sustainability): scheduled but did not appear. Professor Swap Follow-Up Feedback Aaron Rampersadsingh and Jackie Ostrander 25 pairs of professors participated. Unfortunately, there was a problem with the original email, which didnt go through to everyone. Therefore 4 pairs withdrew. Almost all feedback indicated that they would be in favor of repeating the experience (only 20% response rate however). Students enjoyed the change of pace and report considering taking courses in other majors as a result. Some students wanted it the swap to last for longer than one session. The program will be repeated in the Fall (the sign-up sheet was sent around). Professors will have more say in who they get matched with; a list of options will be provided at the in-service. Haiti Relief Efforts Ed Eloi Ed Eloi had just returned from a week-long trip to Haiti; the devastation and living conditions are terrible. The goal is to obtain 100% participation from faculty and staff in the program to extend two scholarships to Haitian students. Between the concert, t-shirt sales, the AFT donation, and other donations, the Relief team has already raised enough money to fund one student. Ramapo is connected to Haiti we have a permanent collection of Haitian art (2nd largest in the country). Remembrance Day today at 3pm in the Sharpe Theater (Berry Center). President/Provost Report No report today. President Mercer is in Trenton talking to representatives about the recent unveiled tuition cap (4%). The cap is defined such that Ramapo could only raise tuition by ~$48 per student (much less than other schools). Faculty Assembly Executive Council, At-Large Representative Nominees Presentations Kay Fowler Thanks were extended to those who had been elected as Unit Representatives to the FAEC. These individuals are Elaine Risch (LIB), Sam Mustafa (AIS), Jillian Weiss (SSHS), Max Goldberg (TAS), Ruma Sen (CA), and Alex Olbrect (ASB). Additional nominations to at-large positions were solicited, but no further volunteers came forward. The first nominee is Eric Haye (ASB). He teaches finance and has been at Ramapo for 14 years. He has served on many committees, including the SBR and Sabbatical Committee and the Career Development Committee. He is currently serving on ARC. He is interested in moving the governance process forward and plans to take a global college perspective. The second nominee is Jeremy Teigen (AIS). He teaches political science. He has served on a number of committees as well. He described himself as empirically-minded with a quantitative background. Is interested in how Ramapos institutional transformations have influenced outcomes. His qualifications include being happy to hear feedback. Kay Fowler moved to forego electronic balloting and elect by affirmation. Motion seconded. Eric Haye unanimous approval (voice vote). Jeremy Teigen unanimous approval (voice vote). Academic Review Committee (ARC) Report Larry DAntonio Online Survey of Faculty Attitudes about Online Courses. All faculty are encouraged to take the survey even if you havent already taught an online course. ARC will be developing online course policy and needs faculty feedback. Its a short survey. Thanks to all who agreed to participate in the second online student evaluation pilot. About 30 professors (70 sections) have agreed and that should provide a sufficient amount of data. Students and professors will receive instructions and a link to an online video that demonstrates how to complete the evaluations. Continued until next year Provost has asked ARC to look at Minors. Currently there is a limit of 5 courses. Is this the policy that we want? Its not codified currently. There were several questions about the policy of double-counting courses between similar majors and minors. This policy will also be included in ARCs deliberations on this topic. Graduate Courses evaluations. Dont have guidelines for these currently, but they are needed and may be hard to construct. In-Service Organization Lysandra Perez-Stromolo Comments on In-Service in General There were a number of comments regarding the last-minute scheduling of in-service. It was suggested that the dates just be set well in advance and not changed. It was also suggested that the beginning and end of the semesters are very busy times and that in-service be held mid-semester. Regarding duration, many felt that two days were not necessary. It was noted that in-service is not contractually obligated anymore (used to be). Regarding documentation, it was suggested that in-service activities be documented and a report prepared. Otherwise, much good work is essentially lost in the void. Data should be provided in advance for topics under discussion. Faculty generally expressed an interest in determining the content of the in-services themselves rather than having the agendas set by the administration. In the event that the administration does suggest a topic, sufficient rationale needs to be provided for its inclusion. Comments about the Content of the In-Service on May 25th and 26th. Suggestions: Rigor across Programs (suggested topic by Provost Barnett). There is both anecdotal and survey-based evidence (NSSE) that students dont necessarily feel challenged. This topic might also need to address the problem of under-prepared students. Longitudinal survey data, content analyses of course syllabi, and focus group data are all available and it was suggested that these be given to faculty prior to the in-service. Faculty Development; time to learn new technologies. Creation of a Faculty Assembly Agenda for the 2010-2011 academic year (goals to accomplish). The 鶹ý Website. It is difficult to navigate and could be improved. There is a committee on web design but it doesnt function well. Perhaps a sub-committee of the FAEC is warranted. Governance Structure. Could use time to provide feedback to the Governance Review Committee. What do faculty members want from governance? Evaluation of last years in-service, including a report from the Provost in response to the document that was generated by the faculty. Could also include a review of what has been accomplished this year. Experiential Learning Middle States concerns, including assessment. Volunteer organizers will meet to plan the in-service on May 4th, please contact them to provide feedback on topics youd like to see included. AFT Report Irene Kuchta There will be a Legislative Breakfast with the Bergen and Hudson Labor Council this Saturday, April 17th at 9am in Paramus at the IBEW. Ramapo not being treated very well. The goal is to convince legislators to vote against this budget. Call Irene for more info, x7577. The current budget is devastating to Ramapo. We are facing both budget cuts as well as a tuition cap that is prohibitive given the budget cuts. It was suggested that we not sound like we are advocating raising tuition and note that the budget also cuts state aid to students. There is an AFT general membership meeting on April 28th in the Pavilion at 11:30. Lunch will be served. Meeting adjourned.
