Discussion of the writing program at Ramapo General discussion among members present on writing at the college including housing writing in one unit and writing across the College. Executive Council is meeting with members from the writing convening group from 10:15-10:45a. Historical background was provided that the Faculty Advisory Council met with former Provost Pfeiffer and the Writing Across the Curriculum group to discuss Writing Intensive course designations and the need for further follow-up. (See also Item #7) Action Item: Provost Barnett and Dean Mazza will be invited to the May 9 meeting to discuss writing needs from their perspective. 2. Grade due date for Fall 2007 The deadline to submit grades for fall 2007 is December 28, 2007. President Karlin provided information on the process that is undertaken after grades are submitted. Registrar Office personnel review all submitted grades over the holiday weekend for completeness and/or errors. A program is run to certify the grades as complete and correct. Probationary students are informed of their standing and the Committee on Academic Standing meets to review students as necessary. The deadline to input final grades allows time for the Registrars Office to complete its processing and CAS to meet before classes start. 3. Spring 2008 scheduling Advance notice of impending deadlines was not given for regular spring planning as has been prior practice. There was general discussion among members regarding the timing of deadlines, CEP implications on grading, and time spent outside of the classroom on class work. Suggestion: It was strongly suggested that the administration send out a monthly email with pertinent deadlines or maintain calendars of administrative deadlines and faculty deadlines for each semester and year. 4. Executive Council retreat Members agreed that the Executive Council have a retreat or two sometime in May with the topics of annual assessment and CEP issues. Tentative dates are Monday, May 21, 2007, and/or Thursday, May 24, 2007. The decision was made that an all day session with breaks for lunch was the most efficient use of time. President Karlin will see about a location on campus for the retreat. 5. SSHS announcement Dean Henry Davis is leaving Ramapo for a new position at CUNY. Sam Rosenberg will be acting dean while Dean Davis is on vacation until June 30. Provost Barnett will visit SSHS to discuss possibilities for an interim dean and the dean search process. 6. Dean search process Executive Council reps are asked to host a conversation at todays Unit Council meetings regarding faculty interest in serving on the search committee for the dean. The Provost would like the committees to be formed before the end of the semester and submit a list of viable internal dean candidates by September 1, if there is interest. If the search committee determines that no viable internal candidate is acceptable, the decision will be made to conduct an external search. Unit reps will collect interested names and submit them to the Provost. Recommendation: Executive Council strongly recommends that unit faculty agree on members of the search committees, not the existing deans. Recommendation: Executive Council recommends that committees include the following constituents: tenured under-10, full professor, no repetition unless necessary, and a dean from another unit. 7. Writing Convening Group Members of Executive Council met with Don Fucci and Lisa Williams from the writing convening group to discuss writing across the College. Current practice has the writing convening group, a sub-group of the literature convening group, overseeing College English while professional staff works with the Writing Center. Writing Intensive (WI) and Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) are other college-wide practices. Don Fucci provided a brief historical background of the dissolution of the Division of Basic Studies (DBS) and the splintering of writing and reading support to other units across campus. Placement testing is done by the Testing Center for reading, writing, and math. Professional staff are primarily responsible for pre-developmental and developmental writing and reading courses. Perceptions from the writing faculty are that current students are not proficient in either reading or writing to interpret or analyze college-level readings. Executive Council members also mentioned comments from other faculty that students did not have the level of critical thinking or writing skills to prepare them for major courses. However, no needs-assessment has been done within the last five years to support the perception of students lacking both reading and writing competence. During general discussion among all those present, a past consultants report was mentioned that recommended coordinating writing support under a single entity and suggested a Director of Writing be hired. The main points of the discussion centered on assessing student needs in reading and writing, confusion of how or if those needs are being met, and what is the overall vision of the College in terms of writing ability. Action Item: Executive Council invites Dean Jennefer Mazza and Provost Beth Barnett to the May 9 meeting to discuss writing needs and campus perspectives. 8. May 9 meeting Executive Council will meet next week and invites Provost Barnett and Dean Mazza for a 30 minute discussion on the topic of writing across the College. Executive Council will meet on its own for the rest of the time. President Karlin will notify members of the meeting location when he sends out the agenda. 9. Richardson Award The Richardson Award will not be given this spring; it will be awarded in the fall of 2007. The award is given in memory of Jack Richardson but newer faculty are not aware of his impact on the campus. There was general discussion among members that the relevancy of the award needed to be changed and the title may need to be updated. The award has been predominantly housed in one unit. Representatives from SSHS will poll their unit on what it wants to do with the Richardson Award for future awardees and report back to the Executive Council. 10. Final exam schedule Action Item: President Karlin will check with Provost Barnett in regards to starting times. Submitted by M.
