Faculty Assembly Nominations for open Executive Council seats will close and Assembly members will vote at todays meeting. Currently there is one candidate for the All-College representative and one candidate for the Under-10 representative. Main agenda discussion item will be on college-wide scholarship support. President Mercer will provide a brief report of activities to the Assembly. President Karlin will ask for a brief moment of silent reflection to remember the students, faculty, and staff of Virginia Tech. 2. Information Technology Consultants Consultants in Information Technology are meeting with various groups of faculty, staff, and administrators on college-wide and unit technology needs. Executive Council members are asked to review the ARC report on General Education focusing on the area of information literacy and technology literacy. All Task Force reports are posted on the Provosts webpage. 3. In-service update An outline of activities was submitted from the sub-committee that included: the first hour focusing on scholarship needs and the second hour focusing on experiential learning. In-service workshops will be titled: Faculty In-Service Workshops 1) Research & Support for scholarship and 2) Experiential Learning Implementation & Issues [Implementing CEP Experiential Learning] 4. Presentation by Mike Edelstein from SBGC Mike Edelstein talked with Executive Council regarding the Sustainable Buildings & Grounds Committee and a draft report and proposal of reorganizing the committee structure. Projects that the SBGC have been involved with include the current campus landscaping however the committee has had no input on sustainable building practices with the Academic Building or the new residence halls. Scheduling meetings at times when most of the committee members can meet has been problematic and is addressed in the report. Action Item: Professor Edelstein will email a copy of the proposal to President Karlin who will distribute it to members of the Executive Council. 5. Minutes of the April 18 Executive Council meeting are approved. Provost Barnett met with the Executive Council from 10:00 to 11:00 am and included the following informational item: A copy of the approved convener position will be posted and notification emails will be sent. 6. Deans evaluation Provost Barnett plans to assemble a Task Force to review the evaluation process with input from both deans and faculty beginning fall 2007. On the question of faculty review of evaluation results, the Provost informed members that other schools do not provide access to evaluation results especially due to the liability issue of personnel evaluations. Students are not allowed to see results from their faculty evaluations that set a precedent. Executive Council members provided a brief history of the process stating that the evaluation of deans came from the faculty, not the administration, and that results would be available in the Library for members of each unit to review. The purpose of the deans evaluation was that faculty needed a mechanism for feedback. Suggestion: Deans will provide a State of the Unit or an online evaluation form in two parts: 1) personnel and 2) unit feedback. Action Item: The Provosts Office will send out paper evaluations this year and provide an overall summary of general goals based on tabulated results. 7. Adjunct rates Data for spring 2007 is not collated at this time. This data may have an effect on reassigned time based on the possibility of lower adjunct rates. ASB is considering a proposal to shrink the number of convening groups in its unit to four for a one year trial. 8. Support for writing across the College General discussion among those present on the need for a faculty member to direct freshman writing and the need for a convener of writing. Overall discussion is needed regarding the writing needs of the College. Suggestion: Executive Council will invite Ed Shannon and Don Fucci to next weeks meeting to discuss writing across the College. Jennefer Mazza, Dean of AIS, and Provost Barnett may also be included in subsequent conversations to provide a common vision. Submitted by M.
