Increasingly, businesses, governmental agencies, non-profits,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">media and community groups recognize the need for individuals with expertise in a systems <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">approach to the triple bottom line that integrates society, ecology and economy. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sustainability major combines theory with projects and experiential learning to provide students <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with depth in Sustainability thinking and practice, which can be applied to any field.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students who complete the Sustainability major are equipped to apply integrative skill sets to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">their careers in ways that promote social, economic and ecological well-being. The major also <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">empowers students to incorporate civic engagement, social justice and personal transformation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">into their lives.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The BA in Sustainability consists of thirteen courses &#8211; 52 credits (up to 56 credits for students<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">who take one of the science-based Disciplinary Clusters). Three Foundational Courses focus on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sustainability from socio-cultural, business, and ecological perspectives, which lead to a writing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">intensive <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Integrative Seminar in Sustainability. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students also take two required core courses and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">choose two out of five electives within the major that ground students in the practice of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sustainability by focusing on themes such as leadership, methods in sustainability, environmental <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0p<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">olicy, environmental literature, environmental law, and climate change, as well as areas such as<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">food, water and energy. For students to gain depth in a particular area of interest where <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sustainability may be applied, three courses are drawn from one of the following Disciplinary <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Clusters: Environmental Science, (Business) Management, Law and Society, Environmental<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Studies, Earth Science, Food Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Contemplative Studies, and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Philosophy.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The two fourth-year capstone courses focus on independent student projects that highlight practice-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ased, process-oriented approaches to address the pressing social, ecological and economic<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students are encouraged to use their nine free electives to also complete a minor or, in some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cases with one or two summer or winter courses, a second major. Waivers do not apply to major Requirements.<\/li>\n<li>Double counting between General Education, School Core, and major may be possible. Check with your advisor to see if any apply.<\/li>\n<li>Writing Intensive Requirement (five courses): two writing intensive courses in the general education curriculum are required: Critical Reading and Writing and Studies in the Arts &amp; Humanities the other three courses are taken in the major.<\/li>\n<li>Not all courses are offered each semester.
