fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>About the Minor<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p>Latino\/a and Latin American Studies is an exciting interdisciplinary minor.\u00a0 Traditional disciplines (such as history, sociology, literature, and language) are organized into a program of study so that the student may develop familiarity with history, politics and social issues in Latin America, as well as a knowledge of the complexity of Latino\/a cultures and studies in the United States.\u00a0 Students who complete this minor should be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of U.S.-Latin American relations and sensitivity to the global, diverse nature of cultural issues in Latin America and those surrounding the Latino\/a community in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Latin America consists of many countries from the Rio Grande to the South Pole.\u00a0 Each of these countries possesses varied and dynamic cultures.\u00a0 For example, the best of the modern age can be found in the huge metropolitan centers of Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Mexico City.\u00a0 The best of the ancient civilizations still survive, for instance, in the Maya of Mexico and Central America and the Inca and Tupi-Guarani of South America.\u00a0 The United States is home to often several generations of people of Latino heritage whose ancestors either precede the founding of the nation or who migrated and settled there bringing with them their cultural richness and creating new cultural expressions in the new land.<\/p>\n<p>The minor is offered by a faculty with varied backgrounds.\u00a0 Classes are offered on a regular basis in sociology, history, Spanish language and literature.\u00a0 In addition, there are courses offered in art, music, media and migration, to name a few.<\/p>\n<p>A program of Latino\/a and Latin American Studies is highly recommended in combination with such majors as Spanish, Social Work, Communications, International Business, and International Studies.\u00a0 L<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">atinos comprised more than 60 million in 2019 or 18.5 percent of the population, and is expected to double by 2050, according to U.S.Census Bureau.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Outcomes of the Minor <\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<p><strong>Goal<\/strong>: Students will be able to exhibit an understanding of Latin American and\/or Latinx cultures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Outcome 1:<\/strong> Articulate knowledge of Latinx people of the Americas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Outcome 2:<\/strong> Interpret Latinx cultural expressions of the Americas.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Requirements of the Minor <\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<ol>\n<li>Students are required to take 5 courses (i.e., 20 credits) to complete this minor.<\/li>\n<li>Courses fulfilling the requirements for the primary or second major may count towards the requirements of the minor, but may not exceed one-half of the credits required in the minor.
