Introduction Alignment with AACSB 2020 Standards The AACSB 2020 Standards continue to emphasize faculty engagement in the area of teaching while broadening the ways in which faculty members can demonstrate it. Consistency with mission is key, with new areas of focus in thought leadership and societal impact. AACSB 2020 Standard #3.1 on Faculty and Professional Staff Resources states: The school maintains and strategically deploys participating and supporting faculty who collectively demonstrate significant academic and professional engagement that, in turn, supports high-quality outcomes consistent with the schools mission. (AACSB p.27). Standard #3.2 describes four classifications through which faculty can be qualified: Faculty are qualified through initial academic or professional preparation and sustain currency and relevancy appropriate to their classification, as follows: Scholarly Academic (SA), Practice Academic (PA), Scholarly Practitioner (SP) or Instructional Practitioner (IP). Otherwise, faculty are classified as Additional Faculty (A). (AACSB p.27). Normally, a minimum of 40 percent of a schools faculty resources are SA and 90 percent are SA+PA+SP+IP at the global level (i.e., across the entire accredited unit) and in disciplines defined by the school in alignment with degrees or majors. (AACSB p.31). AACSB 2020 Standard #8.1 on Impact of Scholarship states: The schools faculty collectively produce high-quality, impactful intellectual contributions that are consistent with its mission, expected outcomes, and strategies and that, over time, develop into mission-consistent areas of thought leadership for the school. (AACSB p.51). Standard 8.2 further describes expectations for thought leadership: The school collaborates with a wide variety of external stakeholders to create and transfer credible, relevant, and timely knowledge that informs the theory, policy, and/or practice of business to develop into mission-consistent areas of thought leadership for the school. (AACSB p.51). AACSB 2020 Standard 8.3 emphasizes the need for societal impact: The schools portfolio of intellectual contributions contains exemplars of basic, applied, and/or pedagogical research that have had a positive societal impact, consistent with the schools mission. (AACSB p.51). Guidelines for Applying Definitions The operational criteria for ASB faculty qualifications that follow reflect the intent of these standards. The combination of initial academic preparation and professional experience and ongoing scholarly and professional engagement determine whether a faculty member is qualified as SA, PA, SP or IP. All faculty members are expected to demonstrate activities that sustain the currency and relevance of their instruction in alignment with their primary teaching responsibilities and in support of ASBs mission. A broad range of opportunities are available to faculty to sustain their qualified status. It is the responsibility of every faculty member each year to cite his or her accomplishments within each of the groups and to provide complete documentation for each citation, including evidence of impact, where applicable. The Tier 1A, 2A, 1B and 2B listings of qualifying activities are not intended to be all inclusive. All faculty activities, whether listed in this document or suggested for consideration by an individual faculty member, will be reviewed for appropriateness by the Dean or designated representative. Tier 1A Intellectual Contributions details peer reviewed scholarship that includes peer reviewed journal articles (a requirement for all SA faculty), books and chapters as well as cases, which are critically relevant to the teaching mission of the school. This tier also recognizes roles of editors and leaders in academic societies and associations as prominent positions of thought leadership. Subject matter experts in the discipline select scholars for such positions in recognition of their qualification for the role. Tier 1B Practice Contributions are significant activities that impact the practice of business and are subject to review and/or validation by subject matter experts. Note that this category is available to all classifications of faculty, reflecting the schools mission to have engaged faculty who bridge theory and practice and directly engage with business. These activities are recognized by subject matter experts in the profession, whether they be editors, professional certification boards, or business or trade groups. Tier 2A Academic Engagement Activities include faculty contributing to the knowledge base in their field, sharing their work beyond the college, and participating in academic societies and associations. Since the schools mission is student and teaching centered, this tier also includes leading major teaching and new program initiatives and providing students with extra-curricular opportunities to engage with scholarship, business, and the wider community. Tier 2B Professional Engagement Activities include consulting and working in the field, maintaining professional certifications, and engaging externally with businesses through public events, business organizations and serving on boards of directors. Definition of Faculty Qualified as Scholarly Academics (SA) and Practice Academics (PA) Both original academic preparation (degree completion) and subsequent activities that maintain or establish preparation for current teaching responsibilities will be required to establish a faculty member as an SA or PA (AACSB p.27-28): Original academic preparation for SA and PA: a terminal degree in a business field (normally PhD or DBA). Other considerations: Faculty members who are ABD may be considered qualified as a Scholarly Academic. This status will apply for up to three years beyond their most recently completed graduate comprehensive examination (AACSB p. 29). Faculty members with a newly received doctoral degree will be considered qualified as either SA or PA for a period of five years from the date of conferral of the degree. To maintain this status, they must demonstrate substantial annual progress toward meeting, within a five year period, the standards set forth for maintaining SA/PA qualification. (AACSB p.29). Faculty members with a Juris Doctor degree, and who meet the standards set forth for maintaining SA or PA will be considered qualified as SA or PA to teach business law and the legal environment of business, e.g. ethics, sustainability, etc. (AACSB p.30). Faculty members with a graduate degree in taxation, or a combination of graduate degrees in law and accounting, and who meet the standards set forth for maintaining SA or PA, will be considered qualified as SA or PA to teach taxation (AACSB p.30). AND Subsequent activities for Scholarly Academic: Participating faculty members maintain SA status through ongoing, sustained, and substantive academic activities as described in Table 1 below. (AACSB p. 30). Subsequent activities for Practice Academic: Participating faculty members maintain PA status through ongoing, sustained and substantive professional engagement activities as described in Table 1 below. (AACSB p.30). Definition of Faculty Qualified as Scholarly Practitioners (SP) and Instructional Practitioners (IP) Both relevant academic preparation and relevant professional experience will be required to establish a faculty member qualified as an SP or IP (AACSB p.28): Original qualifications for SP and IP: A masters degree in the field related to the area of teaching assignment is normally required, along with professional experience: relevant to the faculty members teaching assignment; significant in duration (minimum of five years work experience in a business or professional enterprise or public service organization); significant in level of responsibility (must have risen to leadership position or be a recognized expert in a functional area); current at the time of hiring (in the last five years prior to hire as faculty). (AACSB p.30); AND Subsequent activities for Scholarly Practitioner: Participating faculty members maintain SP status through ongoing, sustained, and substantive scholarly activities as described in Table 1 below. (AACSB p. 30). Subsequent activities for Instructional Practitioner: Participating faculty members maintain IP status through ongoing, sustained and substantive professional engagement activities as described in Table 1 below. (AACSB p.30). Subsequent activities for Supporting Faculty Members (e.g. Adjuncts): Supporting faculty members will maintain their SA, PA, SP or IP status by meeting one of the following two criteria: Continued full-time employment in a field related to their area of teaching (applies to PA and IP only), or At least three intellectual contributions or professional activities in the most recent five year period from Tier 1A, 1B, 2A and 2B. (AACSB p.52): Basic or Discovery Scholarship is directed toward increasing the knowledge base and the development of theory. Applied or Integration/Application Scholarship draws from basic research and uses accumulated theories, knowledge, methods and techniques to solve real-world problems and/or issues associated with practice. Teaching and Learning Scholarship explores the theory and methods of teaching and advances new understandings, insights, content and methods that impact learning behavior. The HYPERLINK "/asb/faculty-research/research-resources/"ASB Faculty Research website on the Ramapo Intranet lists resources that faculty should use as they select outlets for their research, collectively called ASB Journal Resources. It is assumed that peer-reviewed articles or cases published in journals listed in one of ASB Journal Resources have been subjected to a documented formal review process by peers or subject matter experts. If the journal is not listed in any of the ASB Journal Resources, it is the authors responsibility to document the journals review process and submit to the Dean or designated representative for approval. Self-published or vanity press books are not appropriate contributions. Distinct activity means a paper presented at an academic conference may count as a presentation or as a publication in the proceedings of the conference, but not both. Interdisciplinary work as a means of having a positive impact on society is encouraged (p.50.) A grant acquisition and proposal may not be double-counted. Guidance for Academic and Professional Engagement Activities For continuing activities, such as consulting, sustained professional work and being a member of an editorial board or board of directors, each year may be considered a separate activity. Working in ones discipline must be material in terms of time and substance. The requirement for determining the validity of an activity will include its scope and the amount of effort required by the faculty member, which must be substantive and sustained and may be demonstrated by: Consistent involvement where contributions are documented Active role in strategic planning and decision-making Advancing the discipline or the profession Creating opportunities for intellectual discourse in new areas Contributing and sharing best practices in the field or profession Improving management expertise or practice Note: additional publications from Tier 1A and 1B are each equivalent to 3 items for PAs and IPs Securing a patent and a patent submission pending may not be double-counted. Some examples of research products and activities which would not be counted towards faculty qualifications include: Working papers In-house presentations at faculty research seminars Newspaper editorials/letters Attendance at in-house seminars Activities for local community service or religious organizations On-campus service (Faculty Senate, committees, etc.) The foregoing examples and other similar activities are all worthwhile and valuable contributions to 鶹ý and its local community. However, maintenance of ones faculty qualification for purposes of AACSB requires intellectual contributions and professional activities of the nature cited in detailed listings above.
